Just Back From Montage Palmetto Bluff
Located in Bluffton, SC this resort is part of a 20,000 acre nature preserve that is larger than the island of Manhattan. The drive from the front gate to the Inn takes about 10 minutes and you will cross a bridge where you can spot the local wildlife, usually involving some alligators that are sunbathing. Conveniently located about 30 minutes from the Savannah airport this property is the perfect destination to pair with a couple days in Savannah, a trip to nearby Hilton Head, SC or even the beaches of Charleston, located about 2 hours away. The resort even makes it easy for you to take in the local area by providing Cadillacs for use of their guests.
From the moment I walked into this gorgeous property I felt at ease. I loved the Coastal-Carolina decor and I was so excited for the next few days the team at Montage had planned for us. To start our adventure, we started with a great lunch. Let me say the food here does not disappoint, there is something for everyone and a large variety of eateries. We ate lunch at the May River Grill, typically reserved for golfers who have played their Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, and kicked off the fun by starting to explore the countless activities the property offers.
I had heard Montage Palmetto Bluff described as a luxury camp for adults (though there is plenty to do for those with families as well) and it is definitely true. Boasting numerous pools, a shooting range, and ample opportunities for fishing and boating, the activities alone can keep you busy for weeks! We took a tour of their world-class horse stables where we learned about the various riding programs they offer guests, from children to even the most experienced riders, and were able to meet their adorable residents. I have mentally made plans to return and take part in riding as I think it would be a lovely way to see more of this beautiful property.
From the stables we traveled to the archery range where their knowledgeable staff gave us a quick lesson before letting someone like me actually shoot archery! Fun fact: shooting archery is less about if you are right handed vs left handed and has everything to do with which eye is dominant. I am right handed, but left eye dominant so I shot with my left hand. My poor instructor had to fetch many stray arrows that did not make it onto my target but one piece of advice changed things for me and that was to stop over-thinking it. They had me shut my eyes after I aimed it at the target, right before letting go, and that helped me tremendously.
After visiting the archery range we headed to the chicest bowling alley and got to test out their lanes. I love to bowl and it was a particularly fun activity to do right before we were treated to the best dinner at Cole’s, which features outstanding comfort food with amazing views. Think buckets of fried chicken (yes please!), fried pickles, buttermilk biscuits, plates of BBQ pork and a burnt bourbon ice cream sundae to top it off! Southern food at it’s finest!
The next morning we were treated to the most amazing spa treatments prior to be given a tour of the beautiful grounds. There are a number of ways you can stay at The Montage Palmetto Bluff and depending on the type of trip you are hoping to have, we can help match you with the right experience. From their well-appointed rooms in the Main Inn, to their romantic cottages along the lagoon and their spacious homes on their property, couples and families alike will find a welcome retreat here in the Lowcountry.
The charming cottages proved to be my favorite of their accommodations with their impeccable decor, cozy fireplaces, screened-in porches and bathrooms that contain the bathtub of my dreams (this is a real thing!).
Getting around this vast property is no problem, but my favorite way is renting their adorable cruiser bikes and taking a leisurely ride among the paths of stunning oak trees draped in Spanish Moss. As this is a nature preserve you will be treated to views of the May River and all the wildlife that call this area home, along with some go the cutest southern churches you ever did see and gorgeous homes that will have you wanting to move from Ohio to South Carolina stat! The property was mostly flat and made for a very easy and enjoyable ride.
I could go on and on about why you need to visit Montage Palmetto Bluff, the peaceful setting, awesome food, friendly staff, copious amounts of activities, but one of my favorite amenities was the nightly s’mores which was the perfect way to end a day at this blissful resort.
